WRITING WORKSHOP

Book Reviews!

Students will be working on book reviews throughout the year.  This book should be a "just right," approriate chapter book that the student has been reading and home and school.  The review will consist of two components:

1. Written Report: Students will complete the Pre-write Graphic Organizer before drafting their report.  They will then take the assignment through the writing process.  Students have been provided with a written sample.

2. Oral Presentation: Students will be reviewing thier book for the class in a presentation.  We will review the format in class and students are expected to practice their presentations at home.

Response to Literature

Both the 4th and 5th graders are working in the Response to Literature genre of writing.  As a class, we are reading rich material to discuss and analyze. Students are then asked to "respond" to the literature in writing.  The questions they must respond to vary and may include, "What is the author's message?," "Which character do you relate to and why?," "What would be a good title for this piece of writing?," "How did the main charater grow or change over the course of the story?," and many more.  Students are provided with a graphic organizer and all responses are taken through the writing process.

SPELLING

Spelling lists focus on prefixes, suffixes, homophones, frequently misspelled words, silent consonants, compound words, etc.  Students are expected to complete spelling homework weekly and be prepared for the spelling test by Friday.  Please refer to the Spelling Homework link for homework guidelines.  The 4th Grade Spelling Lists and 5th Grade Spelling Lists vary, but the homework is the same.

STATES AND CAPITALS - 5th Grade Only

Over the next several weeks we'll be studying the U.S. States and Capitals. Each week, the students will be given a set of states by region. They will be responsible to memorize the location of the stae and match the name of each capital city with the stae. We will do some work on this in class, but students should take time EACH NIGHT to study and quiz themselves.

On the final week, a cumulative test will be given that covers the location and capital of each state. Students will be expected to know each state's location and be able to match it to the name of its capital city. Students should be reviewing all states as they progress through the regions.

MATH

We will be using the TERC Investigations math program and enVision to ensure all California State standards are covered over the course of the year.  Students may be asked to think in ways that are not intuitive to parents. The link below gives access to the Investigations Handbook and the enVision textbook. The handbook summarizes key words and ideas, and provides insight into strategies taught in class.  Please explore!
